A Contextual Overview

After the former Head of State, Mr. Blaise Compaore was forced from office by street protests in October 2014 over his plans to serve another five-year term, a transitional government was installed to oversee the preparation of a presidential election to give to the country a new leader.
FCB Intuition was in charge of the project as the agency of the candidate Roch Kabore, a well known politician of the country. I had the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead the creative part of this project as the Art Director: the main goal was to define a strong visual identity for Mr. Kabore in order to fully support his campaign message. He was then a candidate among dozen others.

Among those countries is Burkina Faso whose latest presidential election saw Roch Kabore winning the contest with more than 53% of votes in a then-getting-out-of-transition country after a civil uprising and nearly three decades of autocratic rule by a forced-to-resign Blaise Compaoré.

2015 : Setting The Tone For 2020

I had the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a pivotal piece of the Burkina Faso presidential campaign as an Art Director whose main mission was to conceive, design and flesh out an appealing visual identity for then-candidate Roch Marc Christian Kabore. The agency I was working for was opted to deliver a relevant and perfectly adapted strategy in a context where, the country was going through a transition after Blaise Compaoré forced resignation and a failed coup-d'etat during that same transition.—

As designers, our job is to help audience deeply connect with brands so that they win their heart. Regarding that project, that was "Mission Accomplished" : since, november 2015, Roch Marc Christian is the Head of State of Burkina Faso, "The Land of Incorruptible People" as the country's name means in Mossi.

Slides below are only a tiny excerpt of the design work executed to go through this tremendous task of designing a visual identity for a candidate heading to the presidency. I gracefully thank the agency's owners for having given me the opportunity to lead both that project and the creative team behind this stunning and vibrant work. Let's dive in !

Scope of Work
—
• Candidate's Strategy
• Visual Identity System
• Messaging
• Positioning
.01.
Positioning a Candidate :
The "Roch", The People's Answer.
An "Out-Of-The-Box" Visual Concept
—
• Simple, Straight, Effective
The answer to the country main issues comes from the people within. The providential man comes in with answers out-of-the-box. Hence, the main message tag "La Réponse" — meaning "The Answer" in english.
The main visual asset — the outlined orange or white square — visually depicts that "box".
• Strength
Roch : a name that embodies both Strength and Serenity. Actually, in french language, the name "Roch" is pronounced "ROCK" like the huge stone slab. We then strategically decided to literally emphasize on that name-word. A slab of rock is something extremely solid and massive, thus, has the ability to act as an almost indestructible shield protecting the people. The shape and lock-up of the logotype is built to convey that whole feeling of power and assurance.
Vibrant orange against white and vice versa, the whole thing supported by a gentle stripe-based pattern. Conveys energy, joy that perfectly matches the enthusiasm of the people, a strong feeling born from new era they're foreseeing for the country after three decades of autocracy.
What we literally called "The Orange Wave".
The Orange Wave, a.k.a. "La Vague Orange",
Conveying An Unstoppable Wave of Optimism and Hope
—
Sketched concept later rolled-out nationwide by cheerful supporters. "People ! To support your hero, you have to express your furious joy by wearing something orange whatever it is ! Let's go all over the place !"
