Bruce Van Patter's profile

graphic recording samples

I create live-captured, artistic notes that make a lasting impression, whether that's during an online session or an in-person meeting.

Graphic recording can be much more than just a pretty picture.  I design each image for maximum impact: to be striking, memorable and organized, so that information can be navigated by the viewer.  Ultimately, my job is to make a meeting's content useful to the client -- during the event and afterward, as they communicate within their organization.

My work also includes creating digital illustrations.  These images are produced over a few days with input from the client.  Samples of these are also in the portfolio below.

I'd love to hear about your visual needs!  Contact me at brucevanpatter@gmail.com for scheduling and rates.  Let's make your next meeting memorable!
An example of VIRTUAL scribing.  Created digitally during a video meeting online.
Another virtual capture, made during a online video session.  While this is being made, clients have choices about how visible it is in the meeting.
This is another capture from the same virtual session, to show how I design them to have a similar feel even while still being unique.
Before the virtual session, I prepare the background and title, keying in to the client's visual metaphor or design elements.  Then I fill this with live content.
Some shorter elements of a virtual meeting are perfect for participants to watch, via a shared screen, particularly when they're answering a targeted question.
These next samples are traditionally done: in-person capture, markers on paper or foam board.  This one is on paper.
For the Root Cause Coalition, created on paper.
Live capture of an author reading from her memoir.  Markers on paper.
For the American Telemedicine Association.  On paper.

Occasionally, I'm asked to work on a white board.  This is an example of that.
Created on paper for the World Bank.
Capturing a talk by graphic novelist, Scott McCloud.
Digital illustration.  The process involves iterations of a sketch before creating the final image.
Digital illustration can include portraiture.  The client supplies the reference photo.
Another example of digital art created in the studio.
Clients often want a "graphic novel" narrative approach to a communications piece.  This was sketched digitally.  The client liked the roughness of the look and didn't require a finished version.
Here is an example of a crowd-sourced image.  At a convention, I engaged attendees as they walked past the board to suggest content, which I then added.
