KEEP THIS IN MIND…
So, what if there was this weird VHS tape belting out a new tune, and as it played it got all trippy and full of illustrative animations. Imagine if ‘Saved By The Bell’ and ‘The Poltergeist’ canoodled and 9 months later gave birth to a dope music video. This was the pitch when directing the music video for Dead Natives’ ‘Keep This In Mind’ along side the creative duo Loveless and Wood.
The core of the film would revolve around it being split into 3 worlds. First being, real life. This is where we’d see the TV and VHS being played. The second is inside the TV, where we’d see the boys playing on a green screen. The third will be through the lens of the 90s DV film camera where we’d layer the video Russian doll style, to create this inception of different layers.
Nothing says 90s more than tripping balls, so that’s what we wanted to do. I created a selection of 90s inspired patterns to really get the psychedelia on. These are what we layered behind the boys in the footage to really make the band pop!
We wanted to create a Dead Natives VHS cover. Which will beautifully adorn the case at the beginning of the video. Using 90s VHS cover designs as inspiration, we wanted to capture the true authentic tone and look of the 90s.
When filming came around, we locked off in beautiful crisp 4K, so we could crop and tuck wherever we needed to. We had the boys on a green screen at all time, from ceiling to floor which is where Tom (wearing a green screen suit) came in. Walking around the boys with his dads old MiniDV camera, he captured a more dynamic set of shots. The MiniDV picked up the green screen too, which is where the trippy 90's inspired background animations came into play. It was with this concoction of shops that provided the trippy nostalgia mess that we strived for.
