  REFLECTION:
When first coming up with a starting point for my monster, I used the gallery on masonart.org. There I noticed a lot of the monsters were more cute than scary. Some were cute and had a dark edge to them. A lot of them seemed general. They were hairy, horns, large eyes, etc. I wanted to steer away from that and was inspired by the monsters that imitated animals. Being a fan of the Walking Dead, I of course had to include the apocalypse as a creative concept. Using these ideas as launching point I thought: What animal would be really creepy and cool at the same time, if they were mutated during the apocalypse? I don’t know why my mind thought of an octopus, but it seemed like a cool idea so I went with it.

I had just read a book called Repossessed by A.M Jenkins, and I liked the cover. It showed a devil in teenage clothes which pretty much helps explain what the book was about. This influenced me to have my octopus have a human form. So from this I needed to learn how to draw to human form. I used pinterest a lot to use as a reference when it comes to how to draw clothes like a hoodie and jeans. I could kind of free hand the octopus’ head, but I needed to use pictures to help me draw the rest.

My monster concept also is influenced by Wall-e and the idea of a creature collecting artifacts of human life. If I didn’t have technology I would have had to use a real life clothing to help me know how to shade clothes. I actually only used technology on the clothes. The face of the octopus I also used pictures online, but not as much. I didn’t use references for the background like the road, skyline or light bulb. But technology does make things easier. It stimulates the inspiration process and allows you to pick and choose things about examples that you like. You can almost copy and paste to make an original product out of other’s creations. Without technology I wouldn’t have been able to even create my monster in the time frame I was given. The program we used allowed us to fill in shapes and experiment with colors and positions that you couldn’t change as easily if you did it with pencils or markers.
