About The Project
Paradigm refers to a pattern of events or behaviors that trigger a significant change in our fundamental understanding of existence and knowledge.
The aim of this project is to explore how these paradigms come together and intersect in space and time to shape an object or reality. We examine both past eras and the present to understand the true essence of a particular object—which in this case is, the Iconic, Tiger balm.
Developed in the 1870’s in a small apothecary shop in Rangoon by Chinese Herbalist Aw Ku Chin, to being sold in more than 100 countries worldwide, Tiger Balm has been successful in creating a very distinct identity and projecting itself as a champion of traditional medicine.
The objective of this project is to reveal the diverse frameworks underpinning Tiger balm and conceptualize it as a product emerging from three primary paradigms: Indigenous Medicine - Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Western medicine, and the Industrial Revolution. Additionally, a system map is employed to understand and connect the various underlying processes at work.
