One terrifying truth about relating to other people is that treating yourself worse than you treat others can burden the people around you. The main character here hates themselves and uses that as a way to cocoon themselves from the world, and while part of them suffers from that another part of them resents that anyone would want to take that comforting suffocation away from them. If you don't understand why someone would be kind to you, anyone who is has an ulterior motive.
