Almenara towers are watchtowers found along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The origins of these towers date back to the Andalusian period during the reign of Yusuf the First (14th century), who was a great promoter of coastal fortifications. These towers had the function of continuously watching over the sea to alert nearby fortresses of pirate raids by means of smokes during the day and bonfires at night.
