Illustrating poems

The illustration is for a project called Tex(T)iled Bodies that explores the social norms around covering and uncovering of the bodies through text and fabric. Poetry is being used as a tool to uncover the notions of pride & shame associated with clothes. The project involves hands-on activities like poetry & cloth installations, scrolls and poetry written with visually challenged communities. It aims to sensitize participants towards marginalized bodies, issues related to gender & caste.

My role in the project was writing poetry in Kannada & English and making illustrations on a scroll that was exhibited on the SMI Live 2023 event.

Poems

---*---

Layer upon layer were the bones, flesh and skin
With the thread over the left shoulder
did the fourth one begin

Till the fabric pores mimicked the skin breaches
Coiled & compressed like a cocoon
The skin underneath bruised like peaches

Material Used
Cora Cloth & Acrylic paints

Dimension
Scroll: 3ft * 9ft
The illustration is supported from my experience of writing and performing poetry with Deepa Academy for the visually impaired, the Kavya Sanje group, facilitated by Mamta Sagar and Saee Goutam and SMI Live 2023... where I had fun collaborating with my group mates and got to put out thoughts and expressions through art in front of a live audience.

Thank You :)
