What is This Photo Series About?
This series is about showcasing the variety of styles of architecture and design within churches, and cemeteries and how they present different atmospheres for each. Some are pleasing to the eye and open while keeping very rigid lines, others are more subtle and diverse, and some are very simple and cold, presenting a more secluded atmosphere.
Why Did You Photograph This Series?
When I think of a series I think of similar things but not the same. I wanted to incorporate my admiration for architecture and fascination with the churches and cemeteries. As they all have the same purpose in mind, however, they have both major and minor differences that set them apart from all the others. Each gravestone, statue and building have a distinct look that gives them its enrapturing appearance. In this series, I wanted to capture what I perceive to be the beauty of subtleness.
What Did I Learn From This Series?
I went into this project knowing there was a wide variety of styles of churches, cemeteries and headstones that existed however seeing it in person is much different from just knowing that it exists. Seeing it in person is much more interesting and brings to thought how many different combinations of shapes are used within them.
The primary thing I learned from this project was that getting up close and personal when doing photos is a fantastic way to see all possible perspectives. Like how if you angle the camera just right you get a beautiful glare from the setting sun, or how taking a few steps back gets the perfect view of the building compared to where you initially wanted to be; getting to see all the little things on your subject, such as little broken bricks in the wall, moss on the stones, or which areas have gotten more attention compared to others based on how fresh the flowers are. This project has reminded me to enjoy the little things that make the photo what it is.
