I created a collection of 3D butterflies modelled after butterflies that live inside the Otago Museum's tropical forest.
I then integrated these scientifically accurate models into augmented reality effects that live within the museum’s social media apps.
Having digital interpretations of the museum's living collection readily accessible on visitor’s cellphones means they can take butterflies home with then. Butterflies normally cannot leave the museum walls so this augmented reality effect is a good opportunity for visitors to take away a digital souvenir. This can promote future learning or be used as a marketing tool. Take a little piece of the museum wherever you go.
The AR effects are accessed via Instagram and Facebook. When your hands are visible on camera the various butterflies will come and sit on them, allowing you to get up close and personal with the butterfly and see all it's identifying marks.
