I have always loved the idea of making record covers, and the fact that I'm not getting those kind of commissions has never stopped me to make them.

Things got complicated when I shared my idea with Erica Fustero. She thought this design would be a great candidate to turn into an animation so we went ahead and jumped into the task.

I based the illustration in the deranged cult classic film Robot Monster (1953, Phil Tucker). This is another one that I have in my list of "bad movie-good monster" movies. The Robot Monsters are spacemen headed aliens with gorilla body and no emotions, so I found quite amusing to make a cover of a rock band formed by these creatures.

The movie was released on 1953 so I wanted to use that groovy visual style seen on classic rock and roll band records. Then I researched on musical instruments, logotypes and various lettering styles that were used in the same decade. 

I also made my usual documentation process directly from the source. I thought that it was funny to include various easter eggs from the movie, like the poor gadgets, the names of some characters and other stuff in the final art.

Once I had the final composition, I painted everything, beginning by the monsters. I made it separating some elements in layers, so it would be easier to do the final animation.

I left all the lettering elements for the end. As my idea was to make a big approach to the 1950´s aesthetics, I decided to make the image in black and white and the rest using a color model chart based in some packaging from the same decade. To simulate the vintage style, I added some distress effects on the lettering, paper textures and scratches where added in the final part.
