The world through a lens

Photography generally plays only a minor role in graphic design magazines, so putting together this issue was quite a treat. Although nowadays more and more stock material and computer-generated images are being used, you can’t beat the charm of a photograph that was created with great care and skill and which is based on a strong concept.
The spectrum of photographs featured in our novum+ section ranges from eclectic still lifes and fascinatingly detailed product photos to arresting portraits, food and documentary photography, and – last but not least – aerial photographs. They show how diverse but also how fragile our world is. Our very graphic cover motif this month, by Tom Hegen, is also a photograph – much of what we present in this issue is revealed only on closer inspection …

The cover

Pastel shades and delicate colour tones – at first you might think this motif is a painting done with quick, light brushstrokes. But look closer and you realise what’s depicted are actually salt pans, captured in aerial photographs by Tom Hegen. »I am interested in the relationship between man and nature,« says the photographer and his images certainly do invite us to contemplate the issues.
The motif is shown off to perfection on Mondi Pergraphica, a design paper that gives excellent reproduction of images and also boasts an extraordinary look & feel.

All this and more awaits in this issue of novum!
