LEGO Designs

As a designer, LEGO is a medium that shares common ground with any other raw material as a means to express a concept. However, LEGO is also unique via the creative constraints it applies through its system.

LEGO is language.

The individual pieces or "elements" represent individual words and are combined together through the system in the same way that a sentence is defined by syntax.  Solid foundational building strategies can be likened to a proper grammar. The individualistic paths taken to connect elements, leading to unique forms can be interpreted as style with respect to both adhering to and breaking the grammatical rules, all within the common syntax.  Learning, understanding and forming new ideas using this unique language provides the perfect medium to inspire creativity by balancing flexible possibilities with thoughtful constraint.

Below is a small selection of some concepts I've realized using LEGO.  As opposed to working from a kit designed by The Lego Group in Denmark, these "MOCs" (My Own Creations) are freely designed from elements coming from numerous original sources.

The Charlotte chapter of Creative Mornings, a global creative non-profit organization, commissioned a design for a trophy-style representation of the chapter's logo. Upon completion, I was offered the chance to present the final product to a group of 400 Creative Mornings participants.
This compact Technic 4x4 includes a number of exciting play features including: working suspension shocks, front cranking winch, functional flat-4 engine and steering tied to the cabin steering wheel. The model has 4 opening doors and an opening hood and features a removable hardtop revealing a roll cage.
