A Chicago-based playwright and former University of Illinois lecturer, Cathy Earnest is the author of the plays Another Bone and The Bicycle. Outside of her interest in theater, Cathy Earnest enjoys watching Major League Baseball's (MLB’s) Chicago Cubs in her free time.

Chicago added depth to its bullpen on January 21 by acquiring relief pitcher Travis Lakins from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher is expected to compete for a spot in the bullpen alongside relievers Brad Wieck, Alec Mills, Jharel Cotton, and Dan Winkler, among others. Craig Kimbrel, Kyle Ryan, and Rowan Wick are the only three pitchers certain to begin the season in relief roles.

A native of Franklin, Ohio, Lakins attended The Ohio State University and was selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft. He made his big-league debut with Boston in 2019 and registered a 3.86 earned run average (ERA) through 23-and-one-third innings in 16 relief appearances. He also struck out 18 batters while allowing 23 hits. Through five seasons in the minor leagues, Lakins posted a win-loss record of 17-13 to go along with a 4.45 ERA and 243 strikeouts.
