A glimpse through the chessboard, into the artist’s life.

Regarded as one of the most influential and famous surrealists, René Magritte was well-known for his witty style in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. For the first time in Asia and Europe, the exhibition in ArtisTree Hong Kong in 2018 revealed the intimate parts of the painter’s life and the creative process by featuring more than 100 photographs and films.

We designed the key visual for the exhibition. The chessboard was used as the main element in the design, inspired by the iconic photograph of Magritte, The Giant (Le Géant) (Paul Nouge at the Belgian Coast, 1937). The hole in the board symbolizes a medium that connecting Magritte and the audience, which allows us to take a glimpse into his life, meanwhile, revealing the story behind his creations.

We embraced the philosophy of the leading Belgian artist by adding his own subtle touches into the type, crafting delicate details into the design, for example, the reflected “e” in “Revealing”. Those sophisticated treatments carried out the style of Magritte—there is always something more than meets the eye.
