Naiise Iconic | Retail Design

Naiise Iconic @ Changi Jewel | Interior Design and Build
Back in 2018, the internal projects team at Naiise was commissioned to create the biggest and most ambitious project to date. As part of Naiise’s mission of supporting and bringing good local design to the world, we wanted the store at Jewel to be a springboard for our local designers. On top of being a pure retail space, we were also tasked to design spaces for incubation and mentorship programs that would focus on helping designers take the next step in their design and entrepreneurship journey.

On the Facade
Standing at more than 8m high, the store facade is pristine white, outlined by a soft glowing light that emanates a sense of homecoming and welcome.
Rain trees, also known in Malay as the Pukul Lima or “5 o’clock tree” as its leaves open during the day but shut when sunset comes around.
The scales adorn the entrance of Naiise Iconic and serve as the building blocks for the visual language of the space. Each scale is handcrafted individually by local artisans to create an abstracted Merlion scale form that projects a whimsical yet contextual interpretation of our national Icon. The overall facade bears a subtle brick texture that conveys a sense of domesticity while its porous scheme inspired by breeze blocks brings to mind a familiar wall texture commonly observed in local public housing.
One of the key principles of the store was designed around the abstraction of a home, with accents and touches of how engagement between the products and environments. We wanted our consumers to encounter our brands and designers in their natural habitat. A light or candle can be found in our balcony and living space, designed with touches of wood and granite finishes. The beauty and grooming sections can be found in our abstracted space of the bathroom - with large vanity mirrors and a moon face marble wall.
All the furniture was designed from scratch to fit the unique needs of thousands of different product types. Each item has been painstakingly drawn out and measured to fit a specific need.

Thank you for taking the time to go through the project!
