Client: Christianity Today // Art Director: Sarah Gordon
Conceptual illustrations on gun violence and the American psyche, and on the topic of safety at church.
The Rorschach ink concept for this piece was originally a little wilder looking and had an unmanned combat aerial vehicle in the center. We decided it would be best, given the main thesis of the article, to focus on gun violence. I took the opportunity to pare down on some of the unnecessary details and made the profile of the shooter more prominent. This was a dark piece to make and was assigned just after the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, but I am thankful for the trust and opportunity to discuss such an important issue.
This piece about church security was difficult to make. We wanted to approach the topic with sensitivity, and get at the tension between churches needing to protect congregations against gun violence while still wanting to welcome visitors. We settled on this rough with the drawbridge half extended because it captured that tension well - I like that we aren't quite sure if the drawbridge is being raised or lowered in the image.
