Historical and cultural references
Familiars (sometimes referred to simply as "Familiar spirits" or "Animal Guides") were believed to be supernatural entities that would assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic in European folklore and folk-belief of the Medieval and Early Modern periods. According to the records of the time, they would appear in numerous guises, often as an animal. Familiar spirits were most commonly small animals, such as cats, rats, dogs, ferrets, birds, frogs, toads, and hares.

Фамилья́р - волшебный дух, согласно средневековым западноевропейским поверьям, служивший ведьмам, колдунам и другим практикующим магию. Фамильяр обладал разумом на уровне обычного человека, имел собственное имя и чаще всего принимал форму животного. В большинстве случаев фамильяры предстают в образе кошки (особенно чёрной), совы, собаки, и иногда лягушки или жабы.
