Community Supported Fisheries
The shipping industry is at an all time high (and I’m sure I’ll be saying that again each year to come). This, to no one’s surprise, is a common trend in our ever burgeoning technological world. The more technology advances, the more our shipping becomes more refined and relied upon. Without shipping companies, the likes of Amazon and other big internet retail sites wouldn’t have a home. They wouldn’t be in business.
But one thing that I didn’t quite foresee happening was food being delivered to people’s houses. And even more specifically, I didn’t expect meat and fish and produce to be shipped overnight and kept fresh.

However, here I find myself extremely interested in a brand called Sitka. Sitka is basically a community supported fishery (CSF) brand that brings wild caught salmon and other fish directly to your home for a monthly or seasonal subscription. Everything is sourced sustainably and with as little impact to the environment as possible, and you can bet that your fish is the healthiest, most nutrient packed fish that you can get out there.

For people like me, this company is a bonus. I live in the heart of the midwest, which means there are little to no options for fresh, wild caught fish out there. And even more, there are fewer options to buy local or sustainable fish that has hardly any environmental impact. Thanks to advancements in shipping supplies, Sitka can keep its goods frozen and fresh while delivering it straight to your doorstep.
And while I haven’t yet ordered my supply for the rest of the year, I’ll be stopping at my local farmer’s market this Saturday to buy a sample of Sitka’s supply to make sure it’s something I want to do.

Honestly, because of such advanced shipping supplies and the technology of the internet and communities wanting to come together, things like Sitka are possible. I wouldn’t have access to the food I want for my diet without it. I’ve recently taken on a pescatarian diet in order to be healthier, reduce my impact on environmental issues, and also be more conscious of sustainable foods. By going through Sitka, I can do my best to perfect all of those things for a slightly increased price. To me, that’s worth it more than money can buy.
Community supported fisheries pretty much operate like community supported agricultures (CSAs). See what you can do to support your local CSAs and CSFs.
