Service Design in Vinyl Packaging

Packaging Design for Vinyl

This design presents a service integrated vinyl display unit for vinyl collectors. The service experience is built upon a “collectors” event experience that the showcase unit brings together via the contents inside. Using both event-based and trophy display features, the packaging and vinyl embodies a pronounced “collectors” rarity and limited “experienced” accessibility.
The Problem

LP’s have continued to sell from 2.3 million in 2020 dispute the lock-down, from the growth of artists and the album it continues as a popular collectable for new and old collectors. Interviews with State 51 a vinyl store, CMF on vinyl sleeves are core problems which affect the ownership of LP’s. From poor storage, lack of care and normal usage the condition drops heavily which de-values the LP to the owner, traders and experience of owning one.

Material Replacement for vinyl packaging

Richlite is a compressed paper based material that can be used in similar conditions and properties as MDF. Composed of approximately 65% FSC®-certified or recycled paper content and 35% phenolic resin, Richlite’s colour comes from a combination of the paper and the amber tone of the resin.

This material was discovered while exploring London's CFM studios and material stores. The material was planned to be used however was replaced with MDF due to budget costs and fabrication time.

Application of soft materials and language

The material application was applied in focus on prolonging the product’s usage with users. This looking at sustainable soft fabrics and functions as both useful indicators for interaction and experience.

How re-playable music can be exciting through ownership

The concept of the service was to deliver a music experience which you can carry through the vinyl. This being custom by the artist, album and live audio available to it. This was translated into a music pad which could capture this and be used as part packaging for the design.

This feature was incorporated as part of the trading experience and ownership value which people had. By owning a digital yet physical object that could maintain a sense of the experience of live and remixed music, an owner would find more meaning within it.
How this was done

Conductive ink symbols were wired to a Bareboard which creates an interactive circuit. It was programmed with music and special features to respond to different symbols with touch. The user would connect a speaker and battery to play the device.
