Full Steam Ahead is a magazine for young people who want to know more about the world around them, the technology that helps us move forward and the people who make it possible. The world is changing very fast and young people (as well as their parents) often lack information about careers in STEAM or have some restrictive stereotypes associated with them, such as “this is for the boys”. This magazine attempts to demystify the world of STEAM by introducing people who work in different areas of science, technology, engineering and maths and who are passionate about their work and their ability to help people. Articles and interviews are followed by links to age-appropriate online resources and simple creative tasks that can be done right on the page. The magazine also informs its readers about STEAM-related places to visit, books to read, events to attend, etc.

 

The design of the magazine is meant to reflect its dynamic, fun and creative brand personality. The colour palette for the issue is bright, gender-neutral and seasonal, based around various shades of green with the addition of orange and purple. The layouts are created with a combination of dynamic curves and straight lines which provides a balance between visual interest and readability of long text pieces. Illustration is often whimsical, but made in a simple style with black or white outlines and flat colour fills, with the addition of line work elements on many spreads, which interact with photography and other page elements, calling to the readers’ creativity and imagination.
