About Evolution of Self-Awareness:

I recently learned of a court case where a monkey took selfies using a stolen camera. When the owner of the equipment retrieved his gear and published the images under his own name, the court decided he could not claim copyright to the photos since the monkey shot them. This got me thinking about how some apes and monkeys are self-aware, while other animals do not share that same facet of intelligence. The concept for my illustration of a monkey with selfies was born as I was looking through instagram accounts. I saw page after page of humans posting self-images. Some were entertaining while others clearly lacked an evolved awareness of what is appropriate to share on the internet. This illustration asks the viewer to consider that very question- how can the selfie be elevated a higher art form?
