Tancredo Neves Square Competition

With an analysis of the pedestrian flows that occurs daily through the square and also considering the future needs, the word “regeneration” precedes any superficial interference that could be done. A new image that could bring leisure activities, which is almost nil today, was pursued. The implementation strategy was to work with activities clusters on the borders, putting together the accesses to underground parking lot, the coffee shops and bike racks in order to absorb the bicycle lanes that pass near the site. At the other pole, exploring what we consider to be a strength of the place, there are activities related to shopping, which today happen in an informal way. Considering the proximity to the historic circuit of the cultural city of Florianópolis, the visuals onto the square surrounded by important buildings and its civic character, this proposal seeks to create a new urban landmark for the city.
Regarding the underground level, the excavation area would require a number of specific issues, because there is an embankment and the water table is very close to the surface. This led us to adopt concrete diaphragm curtains as well as prefabricated concrete due to its quick assembly.
The color tone changes, along the pavement bars of activities, which is represented by a sequence of stripes with three variations of gray. This movement seeks a symbolic reading that identifies a different activity just with the variation of the floor.
The enlargement of the sidewalks, incorporating them to the square occurs seeking to assuage feelings of insecurity for those transiting nearby, since the physical barriers were diminish, the user feels safer to move with a continuous field of view.
The “Three Powers” Space explains the functionality of each one in the citizen's life and brings illustrations and illustrious representatives of each element.  The environment allows you to view the buildings of each power as well as glimpse the square that gets its name.
The aim was to turn the square into a multipurpose place with civic activities. In this sense the civic space could house other events such as concerts, parades and celebrations. The human scale was mandatory on the equipments deployed, as well as on the vegetation, in order to diminish the empty feeling that a large area might cause to the user.
