I have spent a long time following illustrators and graphic designers. Since the release of V-Ray Next a few who double as CGI artists have displayed the potential of the updated V-Ray toon shader.

I found a couple of hours and made this using Thomas F’s McLaren Senna model.

The main thing I wanted to develop was a halftone shader that reacted to light. Then I complicated things by adding a tesselated fluid simulation, remodelling the rims to look as if they are in motion without the use of motion blur, working with materials that are layered in real life...
A work in progress of the solid halftone car paint shader. I would like to build a specular based one for a metallic varnish.
A quick carbon fibre shader, there is more work to do here as the shader supports anisotropy and it would not be too difficult to have a stretched specular based on the camera projected weave pattern. There is still something satisfying about this simple one though.
The VRayToon shader can be very versatile and is open to mixing with most Maya native nodes. In the case of the halftone, I have used surface luminence to drive the size of the circles in the pattern.

The image itself is a proof of concept and there are many applications for the methods developed outside of this stylistic result. It was fun though.

Hope you like it.
