Inspiration:
Here for inspiration I was trying to tie in many aspect of my life and my families causing a disorderly mess of stuff that would look crazy and seem to have no connection to each other.  The trick was then to take a good idea from each of them and to tie it all together into one final project.
Mind Mapping, Sketches and Roughs:
With all this sketching, I was still unsure how I wanted to have my family crest look so I decided to draw heavily from two pictures, the Crawford Resort and the Family Crest.  This led to multiple tweaks and designs.
Alterations:
Almost Final:
Here I almost called it quits and ended it here.  Though the problem was: I didn't like it.  Of the almost six different variations, the one which was voted on almost anonymously as the the class favorite was my least favorite. And this was with around 15 separate different people voting. Also the crest was very safe and generic with very little actual reference to my family. With this conflict of interest I decided to burn the whole crest to the ground and start again.
Alterations Attempt 2:
Whited Out Crest:
Actual Final:
This final design is much better (in my opinion) compared to the first final.  Not only is it bold but it also has some very loud references and also some quiet ones that only I will probably get.
References:
Airplane:  refers to my dad being a pilot.
World Globe: We travel the world a lot.
Astra Inclinant Sed Non Obligant:  The stars guide us, they do not bind us.  Means that no matter what heaven, god, or other supernatural forces are out there, at the end of the day our decisions are our own.
Crossed Hockey Sticks:  Our family plays hockey.
Irish Flag:  Descended from the general region.
Sin Wave:  Shows intelligence in the family.
Wave with a "Crest" - because it is a family crest...get it?
Lines under the Sin Wave show area underneath the curve:  Calculus.
Background: White light with black:  shows what muzzle fire looks like as probably the most famous of our family was William Pitt who was a brilliant general.

Not only does the crest speak to me in the multiple references it encompasses a lot of what my family is, while also having much more thought and design into it then the first one I originally created.  All in all, I think that it was worth it to go back and to redesign the crest.
