The Everywhere Project: Spirit Lake, Idaho

My contribution to Adrian Walsh's The Everywhere Projecta collaborative design project that pays tribute to the classic folk song “I've Been Everywhere.” A select group of designers were asked to create a luggage label representing one of the 92 locations named in the song. I was able to create a label for Spirit Lake, Idaho. The legend is that a Chieftains daughter of the Kootenai Tribe loved a young kootenay Brave. But a governing chief of a neighboring tribe threatened war if he was not allowed to marry this chiefs daughter. Her father consented, prompting the young Indian Maid and her Brave to bind themselves together and to kill themselves by leaping into the lake from a cliffside, avoiding their separation. As the lovers were never found, it's said that on a moonlit night, when the wind is still, you may see their shadowy figures as they drift across the lake in a canoe. As the lake ice floes melt and grind together in springtime, strange and haunting sounds can be heard.
CONCEPT SKETCHES: The original idea was to create a simple mark with clean lines that represented Spirit Lake without being obvious with it's imagery.
