Week 7 Day 1 - Project Final Countdown
Image Composition can be used to create complex new worlds and transport viewers into a place of fantasy. It enhances images, making them their best versions of themselves. Looks at improving upon what already exists and creating the impossible through image manipulation. Challenges viewers perspectives, making the impossible believable.
Title: Into Battle
Technique: Photography
Process: On a school choir trip to China I went on in year 11 (2015) as one of our planned activities we went and visited the war museum. As we rounded the river leading past the museum, we got a full side view of the warship museum. I found the museum to be quite interesting and fascinating and thus snapped this shot.
Reflection: This image was a little rushed as we did not formally stop to take pictures of the ship and instead the photo I took was simply what I was able to take on approach to it. However, this long angle shot creates an imposing atmosphere for the ship and showcases it's impressive size.
Week 7 Day 2 - Project Final Countdown
Title: Golden Dreams
Technique: Photography
Process: Taken on a holiday cruise my family went on in 2014, this image was taken out of our cabin window looking out on the water. I placed the light focus of the camera close to that of the sun to create a dramatic colour shift in the water and sky and snapped the shot.
Reflection: Although you can see the age of the phone due to the camera's quality I still like this image a lot. The complementary colours really make the image pop; The highlights on the water create interest and dimension; and although it is due to the lower quality of the camera, the texture in the sky creates a interesting pop art style.
Week 7 Day 3 - Project Final Countdown
Title: Sun-kissed
Technique: Photography
Process: During a particularly colourful sunset one night at my house I was playing around with what colours my phone would pick up. By placing my phone towards the sunset I picked up this collection of vivid colours and snapped the shot.
Reflection: The colours in this image are wonderful, creating a warm golden sky. Although the bottom of this image is full of guff, with houses and odd plants littering the hill, the colours in the image are still worth it. I am happy that I managed to capture these colours on camera.
Week 7 Day 4 - Project Final Countdown
Title: Rosewood Skies
Technique: Photography
Process: During a particularly colourful sunset one night at my house I was playing around with what colours my phone would pick up. By placing my phone towards the sky I picked up this collection of vivid colours and snapped the shot.
Reflection: The colours in this image are beautiful. The pinks and purples create such a romantic colour palette in the image. Although there are unwanted blurry trees in the foreground at the bottom, the colours captured are just too beautiful to make me dislike the image.
Week 7 Day 5 - Project Final Countdown
Title: Fiery Heavens
Technique: Photography
Process: During a particularly colourful sunset one night at my house I was playing around with what colours my phone would pick up. By placing my phone towards the sky I picked up this collection of vivid colours and snapped the shot.
Reflection: I really like this image and feel although the trees are present they don't detract from the image. The colours captured in the image are also quite breathtaking, giving the image a fiery vibe. They are also so vivid it draws you into it which I'm very happy with.
Week 7 Day 6 - Project Final Countdown
Title: Abaddon
Technique: Photography
Process: First I placed the ship onto the sunset backdrop of one of the images to be used. Using the "Quick selection" tool I masked out most of the background for the image. Then using the "Brush" tool, I cleaned up the edges of the image and masked out the sky between the rails of the ship. Next I took the three main sky sunsets, masked out the treeline in each and rotated them 180 degrees. I used the peach sunset as the background and overlayed the fiery sunset on top of it. Duplicating these I moved them above the ship and masked them so that there was cloud in front of the ship as well. I took the third romantic sunset and at 50% opacity I used soft light to layer it atop the whole composition. I placed two copies of the ocean sunset (one flipped) at the bottom of the image to create a consistent skyline in the image. I aligned the sun of both to be underneath the tip of the ship. A final copy of the fiery sunset was masked and placed in the top left corner to fill in the part of the sky that the treeline had occupied and continue the cloud detail. I then edited the "colour balance" and "brightness/contrast" of the ship to blend its colours with the rest of the image.
Reflection: I am extremely happy with this image. The four sunset images come together to create a explosive, fiery, hellish landscape. The inclusion of the waterline from that sunset image gives the impression of the ship emerging from the deep depths and creates some visual interest and contrast the image wouldn't have otherwise had. The colour editing of the ship really allows it to blend in with the rest of the image. I wasn't sure what effect the taller trees would have on the image considering they would be harder to remove, however, I think they create a lightning like vibe for the image. Adding to the overall otherworldly beauty the image has, creating interest and intrigue as the user questions why they are upside-down. The most challenging and time consuming part of the image was editing the rails above the ship to remove the sky from the original image. That alone took nearly 2 hours of time to complete and I am still not sure it's perfect. The colours mixes in some places are a little off and quite grey, however I didn't want to do too much colour correction on the colours from the sunsets else loose the fiery appearance. Overall though I'm very pleased with the ethereal and apocalyptic vibe this image has and how all consuming the image is.
