Week 3 Day 1 - Project Persuasion
A series of posters advertising shelter dogs to different target markets as shown through persuasive imagery. Images and designs can influence and convince viewers, to make them believe something they didn't before or to do something they weren't planning to. Thus the way we compose images becomes more than just beauty.
Title: My Little Adventure Companion
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: First I plotted out where the text and images were to sit on the page. First writing the slogan and then using a 2H pencil sketching the dog and hat. The "overhand" drawing grip was used for the base drawing and the "extended tripod" drawing grip was used to add texture and detail to the dogs fur.
Reflection: As the dog's face was the focal point within the poster I attempted to draw it with more detail. Although I am not great at drawing I still think I did a good job for my abilities. The dog's fur around the eyes could have been better, as it loses its detail and the face looks very wide when it shouldn't. However, I am quite proud of this work.
Target Audience: Children
Persuasive Techniques: In relation to persuasive images this image makes use of the AIDA framework and audience first language. The image draws the attention of the target audience by making use of a large dog focal-point, and large bold text. It then keeps the interest of the audience with the fun imagery of the dressed up dog. It then captures their desire by calling the pet "Your newest companion". Finally it calls the child to action, proclaiming "Adventure starts now!". This language also appeals to the child, specifically to the child's playfulness and youth, by suggesting the dog will join them in their games and quests. The use of audience-first language also asserts the child is the one benefiting from the purchase.
Week 3 Day 2 - Project Persuasion
Title: Stressed Out
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: First I plotted out where the text and images were to sit on the page. First writing the slogan and then using a 2H pencil sketching the dog and student. The "overhand" drawing grip was used for the base drawing and the regular "tripod" drawing grip was used to refine and further detail the lines drawn.
Reflection: Although I am not great at drawing, especially people, I challenged myself to draw all the people for the week. To keep improving my abilities I also attempted to draw using the overhand style, one I have not used before this week. The drawing became quite rough and the person is more gestural than heavily detailed, but i think it just adds character to the work. I need to further develop this style but I actually am very proud of, and like this work.
Target Audience: Young Adults/ Uni Students
Persuasive Techniques: In relation to persuasive images this image makes use of the AIDA framework and audience first language. The image draws the attention of the target audience by featuring a character in the same situation they are, facing large amounts of stress and numerous deadlines. It keeps them interested however, as even with all this stress the character seems calm. The text insinuating the dog is the cause. Thus it captures their desire, as they too wish to have this escape from all their stress. This language captures the audience and poses a solution to the issues they are having, and draws them in due to the supposed solution. The use of audience-first language also asserts the student is the one benefiting from the purchase, and places them in the shoes of the student pictured.
Week 3 Day 3 - Project Persuasion
Title: Family Gathering
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: First I plotted out where the text and images were to sit on the page. First writing in text the slogan and then using a 2H pencil sketching the dog and family. The "overhand" drawing grip was used for the base drawing and the regular "tripod" drawing grip was used to add texture and detail to the characters.
Reflection: From the start I knew this image was going to need to depict a family and, although not great at drawing people, I challenged myself to draw them all. Some of the perspectives on the characters, particularly their arms, aren't right but overall the image isn't too bad. Adding more detail to the gestural style featured in my other images works in some places but not all of them, causing some spots to look odd. However, I am proud of my efforts to draw the family even if its not my best work.
Target Audience: Families
Persuasive Techniques: In relation to persuasive images this image makes use of the AIDA framework and audience first language. The image draws the attention of the target audience by depicting a large family gathering reminding them of their own family. It then keeps the interest of the audience, claiming that "everyone" will love it, something that can be near to impossible with young children. By promising to solve the children's squabbles it sparks the parents desire and calls them to act. This language also appeals to the family by relating back to common family struggles. The use of audience-first language also asserts the family is the one benefiting from the purchase.
Week 3 Day 4 - Project Persuasion
Title: Old but Loving
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: First I plotted out where the text and images were to sit on the page. First writing in text the slogan and then using a 2H pencil sketching the dog and lady. The "overhand" drawing grip was used for the base drawing and the regular "tripod" drawing grip was used to add texture and detail to the lines.
Reflection: Continuing on into the week I continued to challenge myself with the new drawing technique and drawing people. With the less detailed gestural drawing I managed to convey the soft, gentle, and warm nature of the image I wanted. I also added just enough detail that the age of the character is determinable, which I like. The simplicity of the drawing also works well in depicting the scene. I like this piece and think it is one of the best works I have done this week.
Target Audience: Elderly
Persuasive Techniques: In relation to persuasive images this image makes use of the AIDA framework and audience first language. The image draws the attention of the target audience by using language designed to reflect their needs and concerns of being lonely. In the same sentence however it also poses a solution to this concern, the "cuddly companion", sparking their interest. They then start to desire the product as it not only tells them it will make them less lonely, but also happier. This is aided by the imagery which depicts a old woman happily playing with her dog. This language and image thus work together to also appeal to the elderly. Promising them a solution to something they fear, and greeting them with images supporting this claim. The use of audience-first language also asserts the elderly is the focus of their campaign and that the product will directly benefit them.
Week 3 Day 5 - Project Persuasion
Title: Witch-etty Pup
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Target Audience: Children
Process: Photographs were taken of my own shelter dog Snoopy, my backyard and costume hat. These elements were then taken into Illustrator and digitally altered to create a seamless pop-art look. They were then arranged together with the slogan to create one combined image.
Reflection: The work looks at redesigning the initial image produced into a more fully realised work. Using my initial designed layout and using digital tools and photography to create a bright and eye-catching piece, well suited to the target audience. Completed relatively quickly this work could be refined with more long and drawn out care and attention, however, is still a very good work and accurately reflects the original design. The first image was chosen to be remastered as, although I liked some of the others better, it made best use of the elements of persuasion in design. And, with the addition of colour, this piece contains even more persuasive elements, with its bright eye-catching colours likely to increase the attention and interest of the children that are its target audience. Overall I am happy with this work and think it makes good use of persuasive elements.
