The Storyteller
Week 5 | #oneperday18
Storytelling is regarded as one of our oldest art forms and a ubiquitous part of everyday life. It is a form of communication and shared experience that occurs through many different art forms. This is the theme of my piano. Music is also a vessel for stories to me spread and thrive. I wanted the front of the piano to be the creation process; this is were the stories are made in their purest, static form. The back however, is the story realised visually.

Work Station

Process: I started with a base sketch of the concept. I decided to capture the a bird’s eye view of a work station. Starting from the thumbnails and colour blocking, I blocked in the main shapes and started working on the separately. After I painted everything in, I added an overlay to blend the colours together and added a leather texture. The colour palette can be found a the very bottom.
Reflection: I could have added more details to the pencils but overall I am very happy with this side. The limited colours is nice compared to the vivid hues of the other sides.

Process: This is where the story gets written, the first steps. I decided to continue the book theme and make a typewriter sit atop the keys so that when you are playing the piano, it's as if you are writing the music, writing the story. I put the words "Play Me, I'm Yours" on the book spines because I thought it would be visually unique. Starting from the thumbnails and colour blocking, I blocked in the main shapes and started working on the separately. After I painted everything in, I added an overlay to blend the colours together and added a leather texture. The colour palette can be found a the very bottom.
Reflection: I was actually having trouble developing the colour blocking for this side due to the many books. This turn out a lot better than I expected. The books underneath the keys could be a bit darker. I'm still not entirely happy with the curtains behind the books either. I should move the left music sheet lower so that it  doesn't get cut off by the top of the piano.

The Beginning

Process: This is the front cover of the book. The two covers act as the "book" covers to the entire piano showing that there is a story within. Starting from the thumbnails and colour blocking, I blocked in the main shapes and started working on the separately. I decided not to have the other parts spill over into the sides to keep each side clean. After I painted everything in, I added an overlay to blend the colours together and added a leather texture. These sides have a very analog colour scheme. The colour palette can be found a the very bottom.
Reflection: I like the simplicity of these side pieces. I gives the eyes a break from all the images on the other sides. The gold embellishments really pop against the dark colours.

Process: Starting from the thumbnails and colour blocking, I blocked in the main shapes and started working on the separately. I started with a greyscale version of the dragon before adding colours. I knew the dragon had to be red. After I painted everything in, I added an overlay to blend the colours together and added a leather texture. This side has a split complementary colour scheme with the main colour being red and the other two being blue and orangey-brown. The colour palette can be found a the very bottom.
Reflection: This is a bit rushes and there is lots of room for improvement. Overall, I am really happy with the look of this one. I hid a lot of the body parts of both the girl and the dragon under the head. The girl is supposed to be a child but I don't have a lot of experience drawing children so she looks a little old. The lighting could be done better.

The End

Process: This is the back cover of the book. The two covers act as the "book" covers to the entire piano showing that there is a story within. After I painted everything in, I added an overlay to blend the colours together and added a leather texture. These sides have a very analog colour scheme of blue, green and gold. The colour palette can be found a the very bottom.
Reflection: I like the simplicity of these side pieces. I gives the eyes a break from all the images on the other sides. The gold embellishments really pop against the dark colours. That dragon head is actually a concept i made for visual communication but never used.

If I had time, I would mock this up in 3D using Maya and Substance Painter.
