Hot Wheels
Week 4 | #oneperday18
I found this task extremely difficult. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what product to use so I defaulted to Hot Wheels cars that was mentioned in the assignment brief.

I started with quick thumbnails blocking out the basic composition of the poster. I refined my thumbnail and then took a couple of reference images. After sketching it, I erased it lightly and then lined the drawing. I finally shaded the line art to add dimension. Honestly, I wasn't happy with these so I quickly drew up a version digitally.

Young Kids - Unleash Your Imagination!
Technique: 0.5 Roller Ball Pen and a 4B Pencil
Process: I started by developing a concept in my head and sketching them out in a number of thumbnails. I wanted to capture and appeal to a child's imagination and ability to create things out of nothing. I pulled out my favourite Hot Wheels car as a child, the Firestorm, and used that as the main car. I used a sticky tape dispenser and a note book as a ramp and held the car in my hand as I took a reference photo. After the initial sketch, I added in the finish line and inked the work. I wanted to use slightly shaky line work to mimic a child's drawing. After the line work, I blocked in the general shading of the piece.
Reflection: There isn't much going on in the background in this piece and it may have been beneficial to add extra items to show where this is taking place, that is, on the floor or on a desk.

Young Adults - Blast From The Past
Technique: 0.5 Roller Ball Pen and a 4B Pencil
This age group was the hardest to advertise for as toy cars aren't something young adults need or want, especially since this age group tend to be low on money or saving up. I decided to go for a nostalgic advertisement.
Process: Using a Hot Wheels car at home as a reference, I drew the car first, then sketched the composition out based on a thumbnail I made. After the sketch, I do the line work and finally, I shaded with a pencil.
Reflection: I doubt this poster is very effective. As a composition, it's alright, but as an advertisement? I'm not sure. I just didn't have any good ideas.

Race on the Big Track with Dad!
Technique: 0.5 Roller Ball Pen and a 4B Pencil
Process: Using a Hot Wheels car at home as a reference, I drew the car first, then sketched the composition out based on a thumbnail I made. After the sketch, I do the line work and finally, I shaded with a pencil.
Reflection: The line work and value blocking isn't as clean as I would like. I had another version of this but it was too messy so I stuck with this one instead.

Over 70s - Complete The Collection
Technique: 0.5 Roller Ball Pen and a 4B Pencil
This advertisement is for all the collectors. The car on show there is the Lamborghini Countach Pace Car.
Process: Using a Hot Wheels car at home as a reference, I drew the car first, then sketched the composition out based on a thumbnail I made. After the sketch, I do the line work and finally, I shaded with a pencil heavily to build up layers and get a somewhat dramatic lighting effect.
Reflection: I'm really pleased with this one. I may use this as my final. The dramatic lighting isn't very obvious with my light rendering but I hope it's alright.

Fully Rendered
Complete the Collection
Technique: Digital Painting | Medibang Paint Pro
Process: After transferring the sketch to a digital version, I started painting the car. I started with the base colour and blocking in the shape. I continued to build up the layers as I painted the details and shadows to help define the edges and curves. The cars in the background are simple silhouettes. I flipped and changed the blending mode of the car in order to get the reflection. I built up the lighting in multiple layers. Finally, I put the image into Photoshop and added a grain filter and all the texture. I added a gradient to the text to make it look dynamic.
Reflection: I am super happy with this one. I am really glad to be bad in my element of digital illustration and painting. The lighting looks great, there's atmospheric fog and I'm liking the reflection. There are lots of small details to improve upon but they're aren't vital fixes.
