Week 2 Day 1 - Project Puppy Power
Story telling as told through a series of wordless pen drawings of a moment from my childhood. While taking our two small dogs for a walk, they became interested in the same mark and one accidentally peed on the other. These images show how stories and meaning can be conveyed through only a few images.
Title: A Glorious Journey
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the characters, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the majority of the work and a 0.1 weight pen was used to shade the second dog and highlight the curves on the hill. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the image and give it character. "Squiggle" shading was used to provide the shadows on the ground to create a more natural look for object shadows on the ground as these are usually not sharp but blurry and textured.
Reflection: I'm quite happy with this work, the rough detailing used for the work really gives it a nice texture. I did have trouble creating a realistic look for the two dogs so i think that could be better drawn.
Week 2 Day 2 - Project Puppy Power
Title: One Excited Pup
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the character, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the dog in this work. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the image and give it character. The frame was designed to be simple to focus on the dog and his excitement.
Reflection: I'm quite happy with this work, the rough detailing used for the work really gives it a nice texture. I also really like the simplicity and design of the dogs head in this frame however it may be too subtle in its display of the dogs excitement which was the purpose of the frame.
Week 2 Day 3 - Project Puppy Power
Title: A Spanner in the Works
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the character, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the majority of the work and a 0.1 weight pen was used to create the light hair detail of the dog. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the frame to keep it like the others and give it character. Brushed lines were used to create the appearance of fur on the dogs legs, creating a contrast in the image and adding detail to the work. The 0.1 pen was brushed very lightly over the work using the hatching style of shading to give the dog a fur detail and distinguish it from the rest of the work. "Squiggle" shading was used to provide the shadows on the ground to create a more natural look for object shadows on the ground as these are usually not sharp but blurry and textured.
Reflection: It took a while to be content that the image displayed the intended meaning with clarity. I like the extreme close up shot as it provides a sense of foreboding to the image. At first the image was not clear and didn't make a lot of sense but after the addition of the hatched shading i am confident it displays its intended meaning.
Week 2 Day 4 - Project Puppy Power
Title: Wet to the Bone
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the character, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the majority of the work and a 0.5 weight pen was used to create the darker wet hair detail of the dog. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the artwork and give it character. Using the hatching style of shading, the 0.5 pen was used to give the dog a thicker and darker fur detail, as if it were wet. The 0.3 was also used to create the effect of the slightly wet fur, to blend the "wet" effect realistically as it moved away from the area of impact.
Reflection: I'm quite happy with this work, the rough detailing used for the work continues to really accentuate the texture of the image. The simplicity of the dogs head and the wet fur texture came out really nice, however once again it may be too subtle in its display of the dogs sadness and disappointment which was the purpose of the frame.
Week 2 Day 5 - Project Puppy Power
Title: A Little Bubbles Anyone
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the character, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the majority of the work and a 0.1 weight pen was used to create the shaded detail of the person and the bubbles in the work. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the artwork and give it character. Using the hatching style of shading, the 0.1 pen was used to give the person's clothing a more realistic look and detail the bends in the fabric. Circle lines and light quick circular hand movements were used with the 0.1 pen to create the bubble texture.
Reflection: I'm quite happy with this work, the rough detailing used for the work continues to really accentuate the texture of the image. The dog accurately displays its dismay at being washed which I found a little lacking in the other frames of the animal. I also find drawing humans quite difficult but i challenged myself for this frame and i think the detail of the character is well done. Some of the bubble texture however is too strong and loses its light and fluffy texture so could be improved.
Week 2 Day 6 - Project Puppy Power
Title: Cuddles for Days
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First to plan out the scene I roughly sketched out the image using pencil. When happy with the placement of the character, I moved to a separate page and started work in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was used to draw the majority of the work and a 0.1 weight pen was used to create the shaded detail of the person and the couch cushions in the work. Broken lines were used to create a quite sketchy look for the artwork and give it character. Using the hatching style of shading, the 0.1 pen was used to give the person's clothing a more realistic look and detail the bends in the fabric. The 0.1 pen was also brushed very lightly over the work using the hatching style of shading to give the cushions of the couch a more detailed texture. "Squiggle" shading was used to provide the shadows on the side of the couch to create a more natural look for these shadows as these are usually not sharp but blurry and textured.
Reflection: Even with its flaws I'm quite happy with this work, the rough detailing used for the work continues to really accentuate the texture of the image. The dog seems content although this could be more obvious, but his art is still well done. I  also find drawing humans quite difficult but i challenged myself for this frame and i think the detail of the character is well done. The human's arm/s however are quite awkward, with the placement of the first and the fact the second isn't drawn in thus could be improved. The couch as well also looks rather flat and could be made more realistic.
Week 2 Day 7 - Project Puppy Power
The individual panels of the puppy power project shown and discussed above in days 1-6 are meant to be brought together and displaced as such.
Title: Trouble on Walking St.
Technique: Pen Drawing
Process: First I planed out the scenes with pencil to make sure it looked right together. Once I was happy with the scenes I moved to a separate page in pen. A 0.3 weight pen was primarily used within the work with 0.1 and 0.5 pens used where needed. The main style of my drawing is a broken line, as I find it gives the drawing a appealing sketchy feeling. Hatching and Squiggle shading are used where appropriate to give the work more detail and to provide shading in various frames.
Reflection: Overall i really like this work. I feel it nicely tells the story of my walk with my dogs complete with drama, suspense, and a happy ending. It also features all the aspects of storytelling which I didn't think I would be able to fit into a 6 frame story. Although aspects of the frames could be improved this cute little comic is quite fun and interesting and provides a nice wordless story which is what I wanted it to do.
