Week 1 Day 1 - Project Paper Tree
The passage of time as documented by a series of sketches of a small paper tree being set alight. Occurring over the course of minutes this small tree experiences the full cycle from life to death and transformation thus creating something entirely new.
Title: Anew
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: A video of the tree burning was taken and from that video these five sketches were completed. A 9H pencil was used to lightly sketch an outline of the tree. A 6H pencil was then used to add definition to the work capturing in fine detail of the creases in the paper. Finally a 2H pencil was used to lightly add the floor-line of the image.
Reflection: I'm quite happy with this work, the line-art does well at capturing the tree and it's texture. Some of the edges could have been cleaned up a little better however and in places the tree details don't seem to sit right.
Week 1 Day 2 - Project Paper Tree
Title: Alit
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: A video of the tree burning was taken and from that video these five sketches were completed. Once again a 9H pencil was used to lightly sketch an outline of the tree and a 6H pencil was then used to add definition to the work capturing in fine detail of the creases in the paper. A 2B and 6B pencil where then used to add shadow and detailing to the tree as well as darken the trunk where the fire had burnt the paper. These pencils were also used to create a faint wisp of smoke and created the flame itself. They were applied and in places smudged to get the desired smokey gradient effect. To get the desired look for the flame however, an eraser was used to make the shading of the 2B and 6B pencils more patchy and like it was lighter than the rest of the page. Finally a 2H pencil was used to lightly add the floor-line of the image.
Reflection: I believe this drawing came out well, the fire is well captured within the black and white design. However the shading of the piece means that it looses some of its detail and the smoke could have been better achieved.
Week 1 Day 3 - Project Paper Tree
Title: Ablaze
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: A video of the tree burning was taken and from that video these five sketches were completed. Once again a 9H pencil was used to lightly sketch an outline of the tree and a 6H pencil was then used to add definition to the work capturing in fine detail of the creases in the paper. A 2B and 6B pencil where then used to add shadow and detailing to the tree as well as darken the trunk where the fire had burnt the paper. These pencils were also used to create a the flame itself with the desired look achieved by smudging the pencils and then using an eraser to make the shading more patchy and like it was lighter than the rest of the page. Finally a 2H pencil was used to lightly add the floor-line of the image.
Reflection: I believe this work and especially the fire came out well. It really looks like the fire is licking up the side of the tree and the charred effect comes out much better and more distinct. However the bottom of the tree isn't as well drawn as it could be and in places due to the excess of fire it looks disjointed. The ash on the floor could have also been better drawn.
Week 1 Day 4 - Project Paper Tree
Title: Dwindling
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: A video of the tree burning was taken and from that video these five sketches were completed. Once again a 9H pencil was used to lightly sketch an outline of the tree and a 6H pencil was then used to add definition to the work capturing in fine detail of the creases in the paper. A 2B and 6B pencil where then used to add shadow and detailing to the tree as well as darken the trunk where the fire had burnt the paper. This was done in part by smudging the pencils to create a smokey and gradient effect. These pencils were also used to create a the flame itself with the desired look achieved by smudging the pencils and then using an eraser to make the shading more patchy and like it was lighter than the rest of the page. Along with the other B pencils used, a 9B pencil was then used to create the pile of ash on the floor in the image by smudging and drawing back in required detail. Finally a 2H pencil was used to lightly add the floor-line of the image.
Reflection: This work is good but could be improved in some spots. It has quite a nice tree base and the lower charred section is well done and creates the desired look. The upper charred section doesn't blend as well and the ash pile could be a little more detailed.
Week 1 Day 5 - Project Paper Tree
Title: Ash
Technique: Pencil Drawing
Process: A video of the tree burning was taken and from that video these five sketches were completed. With limited structure remaining 6H pencil was used to capturing in fine detail of the base of the paper. A 2B and 6B pencil where then used to add shadow and detailing to the remaining charred tree. This was done in part by smudging the pencils to create a smokey and gradient effect. Along with the other B pencils used, a 9B pencil was then used to create the pile of ash on the floor in the image by smudging and drawing back in required detail. Using the 9B pencil a light wisp of smoke was created by lightly applying the side of the pencil to the work and drawing in long strokes. Finally a 2H pencil was used to lightly add the floor-line of the image.
Reflection: I believe this work turned out well if less detailed than its predecessors. The charred look of the tree turned out well and the wisp of smoke is well drawn. Although well drawn, the ash pile still lacks detail and could be improved. However I still like how the ash turned out in its less detailed drawing. The base of the tree however is not as well drawn comparatively and could be improved to improve the image overall.
