Pac-Man - Week 2 - #oneperday18 - DXB202

QUT Semester 2 Image Production (DXB202) Week 2 Drawings - Documenting Time #oneperday18
For this first week, we needed to document an object over the passage of time, and the changes that occurred. I decided to use my Pac-Man amiibo and illustrate the different lighting conditions throughout the day.
These drawings were created with different pencils (mainly 4H for the early lines and 4B for the final lines and shading), different erasers (a large one, and a smaller eraser pen for convenience) and smudge sticks to smooth the shadows. I used lots of pencil shading techniques like crosshatching and stumping, but smoothed them out with the smudge stick.

I did a drawing of Pac-Man at different times of day with various lighting conditions to portray the passing of time. The earlier times of day highlight his face from the right while the later times have the sun passing into the distance behind him, providing light from the back.

I'm overall fairly happy with the look of these considering my lack of experience with more detailed shading and drawings, and I think the 3rd image is the best-looking one of the 5. I could definitely improve with my shading to get a more natural, realistic look, and my ability at matching shapes from reality and photos needs improving. For example, the 5th image has Pac-Man's head look a bit more oval-shaped and egg-like, instead of a proper sphere.

All of these images were created the same way, so instead of having the technique and process on each image, I will just have the reflection. and have the segment below account for the entire week's worth of drawings.

Technique -

Pencil sketching, with smudge sticks and erasers (including an eraser pen)

Process -

I started with lighter shades to get the basic shapes before drawing in the thicker lines with darker shades of pencil as the final look. I would use my smudge stick to get some smoother shading across the object.
Drawing 1 - 1:20pm

The first one I drew. The shapes aren't too faithful, and the circular angles aren't as smooth as they should be. Perspective also needs some work, along with the scaling of certain elements (his eyes, hands, feet, etc.). The lines are also a bit too rough and all over the place.
Drawing 2 - 3:15pm

This is where I started to improve already. Thanks to the darker shading of the time of day, I was able to get a better feel for these details. Pac-Man's shape feels more authentic, although his hands are out of scale from each other. A lot of the lines are still messy and sketchy but I feel that the form of Pac-Man is more clearly communicated.
Drawing 3 - 5:20pm -

This is my favourite of the bunch. The harsh lighting of this time of day gave me a lot more obvious areas to shade and highlight, and I feel everything is in far better perspective here. The lines are still quite messy but they seem just clean enough to be a slight improvement over the last ones. It's a bit of a habit of mine to draw in a sketchy, rough manner as is, so that definitely affected these drawings.
Drawing 4 - 9:15am -

Maybe my least favourite, tied with drawing 1. It's scaled a little better, and it has more shaded detail, but something just looks off in terms of the lines and shapes of Pac-Man. The shapes of the shadows aren't as defined as they should be, either. Most noted in his screen-right hand - his thumb and fingers don't look right. The perspective of the Smash Bros base he is standing on isn't right either, with some weird distortions not communicating the volume correctly.
Drawing 5 - 11:25am -

The last one I drew, and I think it's pretty alright overall. Not my favourite, but I think it has the most authentic portrayal of the actual, physical shapes on the figure I used as reference...except for his egg head. There's a clear lack of horizontal space on his body shape, but I think the facial details (eyes, mouth, eyebrows) are the best of the bunch.
I have 19 different Amiibo figures on my desk in my study - small NFC collectables created by Nintendo - and out of all of them, I picked Pac-Man due to his simple, rounded design which makes the shadows more apparent and the highlights more shiny. I could have picked more complex characters like Samus, Shovel Knight or Bayonetta, but I stuck with Pac-Man for simplicity's sake. I nearly went with my larger Papo dinosaur figures but again, I wanted to stay with a simpler character. Fear not, the dinosaurs show up in Week 7.

I took the figure upstairs and used my sister's room for the morning shots, since they capture the light from one side of the house, and my room on the opposite side of the house for the afternoon shots, to get the back-light of the setting sun.
