The final project of a Wayfinding course had me designing a sign program for Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River. The circulation of the island runs in one direction, so I envisioned travel as a series of stops along a journey. I identified several main attractions and designed an icon for each, mostly depicting the built forms.
I experimented with several layouts using the icons and text to form basic identification signs.
For materials, I decided that weathering corten steel would be effective in connecting to Detroit's industrial history and functional in sealing itself against the weather. It would be illuminated from the inside with close landmarks glowing brightly and further landmarks dimmer to communicate distance.
