Behind the eyes of a hoverfly

The brain of this Eristalis tenax male is exposed from under its large eyes. These flies use visual information to control their swift and agile flight, and males visually pursue females in flight. In this image, composed from a tomographic volume, we see how just much this insect has invested in vision - just one eye is larger than its entire brain!
