Spoon Production (Plastic, Wood, Ceramics)

SPOON PRODUCTION IN FOUR PARTS

This project is divided into four main production techniques: thermoforming spoons, woodworking with a set of tools ranging from chisel to CNC, wood dyeing and ceramics slipcasting.

1. THERMOFORMING

This series was focused on properties of plastic during thermoforming, how the shape of the mod is copied differently on both sides of the sheet, and how the mold has to be shaped in order to release the piece afterwards.

2. WOODWORKING

The focus of this series was to highlight the evolution of tools available to us and the improvement in the process as well as finished product that better tools can bring.

3. WOOD DYEING WITH NATURAL PIGMENTS

The focus of this series was to color a set of wooden spoons, using only natural and food safe pigments
the series focussed mainly on dipping the spoons and waiting for the wood to absorb the colors naturally along its fibres.
Pigments used included: red wine, coffee, turmeric, beetroot, and henna

4. SLIPCASTING CERAMICS

This series was focused mainly on the process, and served as an experimental study of casting. After initial troubles with the plaster mould, this project turned into a successful series of slipcasted spoons with emphasis on the CNC cut positives for the mold made from polyurethane foam, the plaster molds and the process of working with the slip.
