Blended Learning: Basic Supervisory Practices for EMS Agencies

As instructional designer for TEEX's three-course series on supervisory and leadership skills in EMS (Emergency Medical Service) agencies, I worked with a subject-matter expert to develop online modules and classroom-based activities. I also developed a three-course certification program for EMS supervisors, managers, and executives. For the supervisory-level course, I developed an online version of the course, for which I conceived, scripted and cast a series of videos demonstrating effective supervisory skills. These videos were integrated into online course modules, where they are viewed by course participants after course topics are introduced and presented didactically.

The series of five videos presented here demonstrate the supervisor's use of a decision-making rubric to investigate and resolve problems raised by line employees, while coaching them in these same techniques. Each video is followed by a series of scenario-based questions to challenge the student to identify the correct strategy to employ to deal with the issue being presented. After any corrections are offered for incorrect choices, the best course of action is explained and then enacted in the video that follows.
