Garrett Grelle's profile

artists' residency studio

The studio allows artists to live and work in the south Chicago community of Pullman. The community is going through a renewal. It is moving away from its industrial past, and it is becoming a community of artists.

The studio joins both the new artists and the existing community while allowing for separation. The public spaces are separated from the studios by the courtyard and by their organization on a different grid. The residences are further separated on the second floor by the roof form that floats over the studios. The gallery, library, and other public spaces are joined to the studios through courtyards. The community is able to interact with the artists, but the courtyards act as a buffer to give the artists privacy.
