Fantasy map of my city

Monuments of my city inserted into a fantasy map.

Vittoria and its 400 years of history is the youngest municipality in the Province of Ragusa. Lying on the right of the Ippari river it takes up part of a wide flat area, characterized by chess-board like mapping. The city was founded on 24th April 1607 by the Countess Vittoria Colonna Enriquez, daughter of the Viceroy of Sicily Marcantonio Colonna and wife of Luigi III  Enriquez - Cabrera, Count of Modica. Vittoria’s population and economic growth was remarkable since the outset.
By the end of the 18th century, Vittoria was already renowned for its exports of wine in Sicily and Malta and vineyard plantings continued to spread even during the Bourbon Period thus also the city grew enormously, proving itself to be one of best grapevine production areas in the country. The wine industry became so prosperous  that by the end of the 19th century  it attracted entrepreneurs from abroad such as  Florio from Palermo and later on the Ingham and Whitaker who built the impressive distilleries which can still be admired in buildings around the city and are a clear examples of industrial archaeology. These were the years of greatest cultural growth and urban city planning, like the Theatre and remarkable Art Nouveau buildings. Close to the 20th century the “Vittoriese Miracle” got hit by the grape phylloxera which caused a setback to the economy involved with the production and export of wine. The innovative nursery greenhouses were invented towards the end of the fifties: they were a real revolution that started a major developing phase and a new way of cultivating the land.  Since then Vittoria has had remarkable records in the horticultural growth  of plants and flowers, in addition to the recovery of wine production which in recent years with the production of the Cerasuolo wine has achieved great results and was awarded the very prestigious D.O.C.G. quality mark.
