You can view the installation online at www.kinoritmus.surge.sh.
This piece visualizes the tempo of a list of filmmakers’ average shot length. Moreover, the rectangle which shows the tempo is set to have the typical aspect ratio of the given filmmaker(s). This works best as a large-scale installation, as a projection, for instance. I got the data about editing from Cinemetrics.lv. I looked up the aspect ratio for each director at IMDb.com.
The list of currently available directors follows along with the relevant information of average shot length (in seconds) and typical aspect ratio:
Michelangelo Antonioni (16; 1.85)
Ingmar Bergman (16.5; 1.37)
Robert Bresson (10.7; 1.66)
Pedro Costa (47.3; 1.33)
Alexander Dovzhenko (4.6, 1.33)
Sergei Eisenstein (4.7; 1.33)
Jim Jarmusch (27.7; 1.85)
David Lynch (7; 1.85)
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau (9; 1.33)
Yasujiro Ozu (6.9; 1.37)
Vsevolod Pudovkin (4.3; 1.33)
Martin Scorsese & Thelma Schoonmaker (5.8; 1.85)
Jean-Marie Straub & Danièle Huillet (48.6, 1.37)

This piece is a continuation of a previous project of mine called Filmgeist. This was made using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The pages were published via Surge.sh, which is an excellent service for publishing html/css/js web projects. More info at: www.samuelsetenyi.com/post/162353439891/kinoritmus-data-visualization.
