ANTWERPEN/ZOO
A multicultural city, ripped to pieces.

The presence of different cultural groups, and their coexistance has resulted invisible borders within the city of Antwerpen. The Antwerp / Zoo photo series was created for the internation program DeFence’s third workshop, which was hosted by the KASKA (Royal Academy of Fine Art). The program focuses on the situations where societies that are seperated in thought exist directly neighbouring each other, which strengthens the difference between their cultural identity.

„During the workshop I was given the opportunity to visit the world famous zoo in antwerpen. As closing hour was approaching, and the guest started to funnel out of the garden, I  quickly became the center of the animals’ attention. The artificial segregation is important, when taking into account the viewpoints of the zoo. What would happen to the animals, if all the cages simply swung open?"
