Decode/Recode Interactive Project

Blowing is an interactive multiuser application specially prepared for the DECODE/ RECODE Celebration of 100 years of Alan Turing. It was involved in the 24 hours live digital media performance.

I started from the term of “celebration” and came up with some activities which we often play in birthday celebrations, such as blowing candles, playing music and making balloons.

Then I selected a special behavior, blowing, to achieve the interactive actions. The main idea is using the blowing behavior to interact with our partners from the activity hall in the virtual environment.

The First Idea: Blowing Candles

I would like to make a virtual birthday cake with burning candles, people from different locations could see each other on the screen as well as the virtual cake, they could blow out the candles only when they blow them in cooperation.

The Third Idea: Blowing Football

The table football is a very popular game in the parties, I would like to let people play football with their "mouth". Two users blow air into the spirometer at the same time, the machine will measure the value of vital capacity of each user and shoot the goal to the one with low vital capacity. This game need special equipment.

The Fourth Idea: Blowing Balloon

I would like to invite people from two different locations to blowing one balloon together. At first, they could not see each other, but they could write a message to each other before blowing. When the balloon is inflating to explode, they could see each other as well as the message.

Thanks for the help from Marte Roel and Merve Gocmen that I made the fourth idea into reality.

The users could see a balloon on the screen and they have to inflate it by blowing into a microphone. The balloon can only be fully inflated when there are two users inflating it at the same time but from different lP address. This is a message encoded in the balloon that can be seen fully only when the balloon is big enough. After this message showing, the balloon will explode and the user could see the other person with which he was blowing.
