IMRAM Postcards 2016
For IMRAM 2016 (Irish Literature Festival) the poem I chose to typographically interpret was ‘Morse’ written by poet Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhugh. The lines which resonated strongly with me, read as “With it’s table-tapping, finger tapping, a mad urge for contact”. I concentrated specifically on these lines. The concept my postcards to echoes is the physical action of finger-tapping and the urgency of this action when associated with the morse code. The medium I used was ink to produce my own finger tapping prints on a page. The circular shapes my finger prints represent the dots used within the morse alphabet. The combination of the contrast of the black/coloured ink prints on a white substrate and the repetitve shapes of the finger prints, I feel strongly communicates an atmosphere of urgency, an idea that someone is trying to send an urgent message to another. Also, the compositions of the linear placed thumb prints also viusally communicates the idea that this urgent communication is very controlled as it would of been when transmitting a message using morse code.
