Learning to Draw (2D design Spring 2012)

Learning to Draw (2D design, Spring Quarter 2012)
from a class taught by Hilary Ciment
This class is an online intro to 2D design class that I originally thought would not be that useful because I had done design work for so long.  Well, once I deflated and deleted that previously unrecognized arrogance, this has turned out to be a very useful, and really fun class!

We are not allowed to use computers at all in this class (it is considered cheating).  We use pens, charcoal, sumi ink, rubber stamps, or pretty much any 2D medium that is physical.  Each week the assignment centers on a fundamental design principle that we explore, and as the weeks progress add on to with new concepts.

I have to say that these are not my best drawings.  This class is less about technique, and more about exploration, so please leave the critical eye for another project! :)
 Symbols
This assignment was about using text to create a monogram or symbol representing our name.
Unity and Variety
This assignment was to take a shape and then created 15 other sketches that unity of form, but variety of content.
Metamorphosis
This assignment was to take two sketches from the unity assignment and fully render the two images and six frames of tweens.
Rhythm
This assignment was to create two abstract images that display very different visual rhythm.  One had to use diagonal straight lines, the other using curvilinear lines.
Minimalism
This assignment was to take a photograph of a set of bricks or tiles in perspective and use minimal lines and no shading to represent the scene.  By using broken lines and decreased detail in the elements on the right, the illusion of depth is created.
Texture
This assignment focused on the use of different line types and styles to create texture.  We were required to take a photo of tree bark and then use sumi ink and bamboo brushes to create the lines.
Pattern
This assignment explored the concepts of all-over, diagonal, zig-zag, horizontal and vertical patterns.  We used gum erasers and a lino cutting tool to create our own stamps and then used them to create various patterns.  I chose to create 3 sets of stamps each set having a linear element and 90 degree corner element).
