Road Rarely Taken

In applying for a position at Prezi, they ask that applicants produce a presentation using their product to introduce themselves.  As a good creative company, they provide the topic, but otherwise encourage people to be creative and present whatever content that would best show the folks at Prezi what the applicant is all about.

In the past couple of weeks I've been doing a lot of interviewing for product management jobs.  I LOVE being a product manager, and I think I'm good at it.  The catch is that my background is not the normal product manager career path.  I started as a designer, then became an interactive developer, and then product manager.  I think having worked in the other roles enhances my value to a product team.

After all, who wants a PM that it isn't technical enough to talk to engineers or doesn't have the design sensibilities to work on the UX part of a product doc? :)

So, this is my story about how I came to be me, and what I value as a professional.  The story is told in the format of a children's book illustrated with charcoal.

As the presentation is using Prezi, I also wanted to experiment with using motion to help convey the story.  In a section of the story that talks about moving out to the bay area, I placed images of clouds outside the slide frames and increased the distance between the slides to give the flying across the country.  In the area talking about my role as a product manager the slides are laid out in a circle to cause the transition to bounce across the circle adding to the feeling of chaos, or in this case context shifting.
