Slime Quest / Miles Quest - Game Concept and Design

Miles’ Quest

Characters

Miles
The “main character” of the game, Miles should look like a big, hulking, thickheaded, totally cliché RPG warrior. The more cookie-cutter he looks, the better. The twist is that after the initial battle with him, it turns out he’s actually the primary antagonist rather than a playable character, because the main protagonist is…

Baby slime
Unnamed, probably going to allow the player to name him. The main plot of the game is that Miles came into his cave, slaughtered his parents (which is presented as a standard RPG battle against two normal slime monsters at first) and he swears vengeance. Pretty simple appearance for this guy, he’s basically just a little green blob of goo. Bonus points if you can make him cute!

Algernon
A minotaur, and the slime’s mentor of sorts. His name is Algernon because I find the thought of a posh, bespectacled, well-mannered minotaur hilarious. I’m not sure how easy it’ll be to give a minotaur sprite glasses, but if you can manage it please do.

Other party members
I haven’t thought too much about who else will join the slime on his vengeance quest, but I do have some plans for a female character, possibly a gorgon (think Medusa). Might just leave it at three characters since that allows for some good development time and the game is only going to be about an hour long.

Environments

Cave
This will be where the intro takes place. Nothing special, just need a cave tileset that’s hopefully less blocky than the default. Something with nice rounded corners, maybe some bones. Important thing is I also need a big rock for slimes to hide behind.

Towns
Not really too fussy about the appearance of the towns, but since we’re switching the roles of the protagonist and antagonist so too are we switching the traditional function of towns and dungeons, so the towns are going to be the dungeons and the dungeons are going to be towns.

Dungeons
As above. Just need some tiles I can make a couple of “towns” with.

Title screens
The main gimmick of the game is going to be that it initially fools people into thinking it’s more cliché than it actually is, so the title screen should definitely give the impression that it’s going to be a total cliché-fest. Miles should feature prominently, and maybe have some sort of random macguffin in the background. Title should obviously be Miles’ Quest. Same for the title text.
However, we’ll also need alternate title text for after the “reveal”: the plan is that after Miles leaves the cave, the true title “Slime Quest” will become apparent via a bunch of monsters running in and rearranging the letters.

Battle graphics
Not sure if you want to do these as well, but it’s going to be a Dragon Quest-style front-view battle system, so I don’t need anything for the party members. We will need some human battle graphics, maybe a farmer, a kid, a guard, a woman, anything you can think of really. And of course, a battle graphic for Miles himself.
Character Sprites
Three Frame Animation
Four Directional walk cycles
Title Design
Simple Pixel
Vector Title Mocks
Concept; Flip-able 'crest'. Title changes after the in-game reveal of the main protagonist.
