Rick Poynor
Rick Poynor is a writer and a blogger of graphic design and typography. The project is to create a poster using the Rick Poynor quote, “Typefaces express a mood, and atmosphere. They give words a certain coloring.” and the poster should show his biography. I wanted to create something with typography to enhance his quote, that showed color, mood and atmosphere. So, I pieced together Rick Poynor’s portrait using text to show that typography can create both an image and atmosphere. I used text from Poynor's own books, arranged the text in different directions and sizes, then overlapped it several times. I used a clipping mask to give the dimension of a portrait and used Indesign to put the poster together.
Though proud of my work, I wanted to create another poster with some color. I incorporated the colors that are used on Rick Poynor's mazagine 'Eye' and on his book covers. The previous poster shows more about his quote and the latter is more about him and his biography. I researched more about Poynor and found that he has written several books dedicated to graphic design and typography. He is a founder of Eye magzine and writes blogs for it. So, I created something that shows his whole biography on one page (poster). I mainly used the pen and blob tools to create the poster.
