Letterpress printing has undoubtedly changed the world by increasing the spread of information. Mass production of books lead to breakthrough-research and the rise of many intellectuals. The impact of Johann Gutenberg’s printing press is still evident to this day.
The goal of this infographic for National Geographic Magazine focuses on the many distinguishing features of the letterpress: the careful arrangement of letterforms and glyphs, the use of ink and specialty papers, the unprecedented level of craft and detail, and perhaps the most notable quality of all: the beautiful impression left of every print. A large header done in a wood-type style headlines the infographic. This exemplifies a very distinct style of many letterpress prints. Type and images have been laid out to inform the viewer in a visually stimulating way. Hierarchy was practiced within the text to further highlight the categories of information and the most important points of every section. Neutral colours were selected for this piece to embody the scientific and educational traits of the magazine while a bolder magenta was used to direct the viewers’ eye.
