The Big Bang Internship Awards Finalist

This was the Brief set by The Big Bang Internship Awards; to created a campaign to advertise the Rubik’s cube to todays market. I created the idea to digitalise the Rubik’s Cube and created an App to go with it. This would create an online competitive platform for the Rubik Cube, like the scoreboards on modern computer games.
I was one of the finalist in this competition
The target market for the ‘Rubik’s Cube’ campaign is teenagers and young adults. The key concept is to re-imagine the original physical Rubik’s Cube to the online gaming community and bringing more of a competitive element into it.  So I’m moving it from an individual personal challenge to an on-line competition.

The idea is that you could link the Rubik Cube solution to a pressure mat and a phone. The mat would be a pressure pad - when the Cube is picked up this starts the clock and when the Cube is solved and put back down the clock stops.  The phone would act as both a timer as well as recording a video that you can post online.

The concept also includes an App that links with the mat and Rubik Cube.
The App would incorporate more features than just the ability to sync with the mat; the App will also have a digital cube that you can practice with when you are out and about. It would also have a ‘help solve’ section, where you can enter the positions of the colours on your physical cube into the App and it will help you to solve it.

To maintain the competitive element, each week a new weekly challenge will be offered for example challenging the user to create a red cross on one side in 20 seconds; this will keep people interested and keep people wanting to come back to prove they can do it.

Social media would play a large part in the advertising and use of the App. With the ability to share your scores and videos online it would make it very competitive between friends, creating a desire to practice and improve so that you keep at the top of their friends score lists.

You can also use the top scores to inspire people to practice more to get into the world competition which you could pick people from the top of the list to compete in the World Cube Association’s World Rubik’s Cube Championship.

The App would also be able to be used with the other two main Rubik’s Cubes, the Pocket Cube and the Professor Cube; this would create more flexibly for the App and create more of a buzz as you could have a weekly challenge for all 3 of the cubes and accumulate more points.

The advert I have created is based on that typically used for console games. It is re-imaging the Rubik’s Cube as being more of a game rather than just a one time solve. The advert also hints at the competitive side given that consoles have a very big online gaming community; this is what the Rubik Cube game would be trying to tap into.
