This 166,300 GSF modernization project at the University of California, Santa Cruz addresses a significant issue on the American Campus today: What should be done with the generation of mid 20th Century modernist buildings which are approaching what seems to be the end of their useful life? Originally designed by Hugh Stubbins in 1968, the College is significant to the architectural heritage of the Santa Cruz campus; yet at 40 years old, the dormitory buildings were in serious need of strengthening, restoration and modernization. This project added new floor levels, replaced the original exterior envelope and building systems, and fully renovated the interior living environment, returning student social spaces to their intended use and strategically adding new student life spaces. As a result of these interventions, building occupancy was increased by 57% without the need to expand the developed site area, at the same time decreasing energy and water usage below previous levels. Particular attention was placed upon the incorporation of sustainable design measures that would be instructive to the student population. The project has received LEED Silver and Gold Certifications.
